I want to give everyone an overview of what E learning will look like the next 2 weeks. Please keep in mind that this is new for all of us. If you notice that your child is doing more than 3 hours of homework a day and is working the entire time, please message me. The way that the assignments are given, I have tried to give some for each subject each day. Students may choose to work ahead if they would like to on their assignments. It is up to them. I have placed assignments online that go past the April 8th date. Please at this time don’t work on any of those assignments. Hopefully, we will be at school and won’t need to do these.
*Important* On Canvas, please make sure to encourage your child to read ALL directions carefully so they know the expectations for that specific assignment. The homeroom tile is where the Google Hangout Link is located.
Where to find the assignments: All assignments are posted on Canvas. The difference is we will be using more of the tiles. For students to access their weekly reading assignments, they need to click on the reading tile. If they need to find math homework, they need to click on the math tile. This is the same for all of the subjects. The only subject that has NO assignments in it is social studies. That is because our reading assignments will be cross-curricular. This means we will be reading articles from Storyworks and Freckle that are about our social studies unit, World War I. Every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday they will need to check the following tiles: reading, written language, math, science.
What days of the week is my child expected to work on assignments? Students may work on assignments Monday- Friday during the week, but new assignments will only be posted on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. On Mondays and Fridays students are expected to work on completing any assignment that they didn’t finish previously. The assignments for our class should all be able to be completed during the day it is assigned. The only exceptions to this would be the long term projects: science project, the April Flip grid book talk, and the reading log. These would be good things to work on completing on Mondays and Fridays. According to the district elearning document, Mondays and Fridays are also days for the students to log onto Mrs. Andrew’s symbaloo to view the specials assignments (art, music, PE, technology).
How do I turn in my assignments: For all assignments, I have either created a Google doc, Google Form, or students need to create their own Google Slide. All students MUST make a copy of the Google doc . This is so that everyone has their own copy. Once students have their own copy, they may complete their assignments at their own pace and then use the Share tab to share the assignment with me. From there, I can grade the assignment and provide necessary feedback.
What about Freckle assignments?: Two Freckle math assignments will be assigned each day. There are 5 questions on each assignment and they cover all of the math standards that we have covered this year. Our class is very fortunate that we were ahead and have studied all of our standards. Our job for quarter 4 is to master these standards. When students complete the Freckle assignment, the score is automatically sent to me. I also receive a report about how long the assignment took and how much time they are spending on their Freckle math domains.
This is the same for the 2 reading assignments that I assigned on Freckle. I do recommend having the students read the article twice or using the strategy of looking back when they answer their reading questions.
How will my child get help if they need it? : I will be logged into my computer each day from 9:30-1:00. During this time, students may message me on GoGuardian if they have specific questions. They may also call me on the Google Hangout at anytime and I can help them face to face with any assignment or problem. If that doesn’t work, they may call me directly. (309) 264-6746
Each day (Monday- Friday) at 11 am we will all meet on Google Hangout, the link is on the homepage on Canvas. During this time, I will also go over any assignments students need help on and give everyone a chance to connect. I really want all students to log on during this time so I can check in with them. It will also give them some time to work before we talk as a group. Encourage your child to do any/all problems they can do on their own and save the tougher ones for me.
A few assignments are longer term: There are a few assignments that aren’t due right away, but students will need to work on a little bit each week. I listed them below.
- Reading log- 100 minutes by April 9– Fill out Google form– it only has 4 slots similar to a reading log
- Reading April flip grid- this isn’t due until April 20. (hopefully we will be back in school)
- 1st grade buddy flip grid: Due: April 3
- Science: This won’t be due until the end of April– Body System Google Slide presentation
- Science: Stroke Poster– if it wasn’t completed last week- this will be due when we return or receive more information
