Week of October 2

In the weekly posts, you will find information about the academic content and special events for the upcoming week.

We had a great week in 5A! We are in a great groove and all of our students are doing well. I’m so proud of everyone! We have had lots of super improvers this week! Ask your child how close he/she is from becoming a Rookie or a leader.   This is the main form of communication that I use to tell you all about the events for the week.  If you need anything, please feel free to message me on DOJO. I will get back to you quickly. I typically don’t check this after 9pm.

Congrats to Noelle! She is our Wonderful Wildcat!

Project Impact Information:

Our parade was a success! Thank you to everyone who was able to walk in the parade to represent Project Impact! Our first fundraiser will be Nets for Vets. Look for information to come soon!

Canvas:

Many assignments are posted on our canvas page. Your child knows how to get into his/her canvas account. Ask them to show you what we have posted. This is also a great spot to find YouTube videos and Khan Academy videos about the topics we are studying. ALL of the study guides are also posted. Please let me know if you aren’t able to log in.

Important Dates:

Monday, October 2- Math expectations are due

Wednesday, October 4- Kindness month kick off assembly

Friday, October 6- Field Trip to Lincoln museum in Springfield

Monday, October 9- No school Columbus Day

Tuesday, October 17- Reading expectations are due

Thursday and Friday, October 19-20 – NO SCHOOL- student led conferences

Reading/Lang. Arts:

  • This week we added to our knowledge of reading strategies. We learned all about determining the importance while we read.  Ask your student about the different motions for all of our reading strategies.
  • We will continue to practice determining the importance while we read to help better understand the text. We will do a lot with main idea and supporting details too.We will also study multiple meaning words, references, and homonyms. Our test will be on THURSDAY! We will be on our field trip this Friday!
  • Now students have 5 different reading strategies they can use on their reading logs: creating images, predicting, making connections, inferring, asking questions, and determining the importance!
  • Each student should now have a book that they want to read. Many have already completed at least one book and passed an AR test.
  • As a reminder, the reading expectations for quarter 1 are to read 2 fiction books and one nonfiction book.
  • If your child needs help finding a book, I am happy to help them. It is his/her responsibility to come to me and ask for help!
  • Our fifth  journal entry is due this week! The journals can be completed as a google doc on their chrome books, but must be printed and put in their journals. I want to show writing growth and having them in the journal is a great way for me to see this!
  • Students are in the full swing of Reader’s Workshop. They are doing a great job and are making smart choices about their learning. Ask them about it! Each week they must complete word word, a journal entry, a response to literature, and soon we will add a book project. ALL of this can be done in class if they are meeting expectations. I will pull small groups during this time for guided reading lessons.
  • Book Project: Our students created their first book response video! I’m so proud of their hard work! They were very good.
  • Remember, if your child is working hard during his/her class time, most of their homework should be completed at school.

Math:

  • Our quiz this week will be on Thursday since we will be on a field trip on Friday!
  • This week we will begin studying fractions!  Students MUST begin to master their multiplication and division facts. They can log on to Xtra math each day and practice.
  • If your child still needs extra help with division, check out the videos on canvas, come in for morning math, or please encourage them to ask for help!
  • There will be videos on canvas available for extra help on the fractions.
  • This week we will spend time learning how to use bar models to solve real world word problems. There are several videos on canvas that will help students understand bar models.
  • My goal is to help the students gain confidence.
  • We will continue using  our math workshop format. During this format, I teach a 20 minute mini lesson, then students go to different centers to complete a variety of math activities at their level while I pull every student in our class for guided math.
  • Students receive a math muscle paper that has problems with the concepts we are studying currently, concepts we learned in the past, and ones we will study in the future. On Friday, we play bingo! This was the first week everyone got to play! The sheet must be complete in order to play. Class time is given to work on this, but if they don’t finish it that day, I recommend them take it home and work on a bit of it each night.
  • During math workshop, students receive extra practice sheets for the chapter we are studying. These sheets help reinforce the skills we are working on during whole class instruction and guided math. If the student completes the math extra practice pages in time for the test, they can turn them in for dojo and super improvers. (These aren’t additional homework, but most students did complete them during math workshop.)
  • Math homework is also handed out during math workshop so that students have an opportunity to start it and ask questions if they need help.
  • Every Friday we take a math quiz over the skills we study that week.
  • Our morning math club will begin on Monday, Sept. 18. It is open to anyone who wants extra help with math. It begins at 7:20 when the doors open and goes until 7:45 when morning meeting begins. Students may come as often or little as they like. *Every 6th week, I have morning duty and those weeks we will not have morning math. I will let everyone know the week before.
  • Math expectations for quarter 1 are to complete 30 minutes of math websites a week. A great place to start is Xtra Math. Students may then choose from Khan Academy or Frontrowed.
  • They may also have some homework assignments on Khan Academy now that we have our Chromebooks.

Science:

  • Our science fair was a success.
  • We will take a short break from Science and study Social Studies for the next few weeks.
  • When we pick up science again, we will be preparing for the Challenger Center.
  • Social Studies
    • We will begin by studying geography of the United States and learning important vocabulary that will help guide us as we learn about the world around us.
    • Students will complete daily geography each week. It is their responsibility to get this completed as not much class time is spent on this each day. Students must write in complete sentences.
    • Students also get to watch the Channel One News each day. This is a great way to learn about the world around us. Please ask your students about what is going on in our world.
    • We will study chapter 2 in our social studies books. This chapter is about forming a new government, westward expansion, and industrial revolution.
