Week of March 26

We had a fabulous week! Students are now finished with our PARCC tests! I’m so proud of everyone’s hard work.

Remember our 5 New Year’s Resolutions for 2018 in 5A!

  1. We will write our full name in cursive on all assignments.
  2. We will be respectful and kind to everyone we encounter.
  3. We will use our time wisely. We will not sit idle in class!
  4. We will exceed all 4 of the Wilder-Waite expectations.
  5. We will be the role models of Wilder-Waite.

Congrats Ben ! He is our Wonderful Wildcat!! Super job!

We added something new in quarter 4. It’s called a Brag Tag! Each week, there are 5 brag tags up for grabs. If I catch you doing something that is “brag-worthy” you could earn a tag! Each week there could be up to 5 students that earn them! It is worth 5 super improvers!!!

Project Impact Information:

We are working hard to collect money still to support JDRF. We sold the sneakers during Pastries for Parents and have collected over $800 from the coin wars. The new totals will be in early next week!

Many assignments are posted on our canvas page. Your child knows how to get into his/her canvas account. Ask them to show you what we have posted. This is also a great spot to find YouTube videos and Khan Academy videos about the topics we are studying. ALL of the study guides are also posted. Please let me know if you aren’t able to log in.

  • We will continue with the reading workshop format. Our focus will be on Storyworks in small group and students will complete a variety of activities to help with comprehension.
  • There will be no quizzes over the Storyworks this week. .
  • No short stories this week!
  • Please encourage your child to keep reading. They MUST use a minimum of four different reading strategies on their weekly reading logs.
  • Reading logs will be due Thursday.
  • All assignments are also posted on Canvas.
  • Reading expectations are to read 4 books this quarter.  This does count for a reading grade and can help boost your grade at the end of the quarter. The more you read, the better reader you will be!
  • If your child needs help finding a book, I am happy to help them. It is his/her responsibility to come to me and ask for help!

Writing/Grammar

  • We will continue to study direct objects and introduce indirect objects for the start of quarter 4 in language arts ! We will also focus on combining sentences. This will help us with our revising and editing during writer’s workshop. A second focus will be on possessive nouns.
  • We will begin studying fantasy writing. The students will get the opportunity to spend the next three weeks writing a fractured fairy tale.
  • Students fractured fairy tales will be due on Thursday. Each day students have 30 minutes to work in class. They will need to be turned in on Thursday morning. We will not take time to work on them or print them out that day!
  •  Ask them about it! It will be a lot of fun!

Math: 

  • Math muscle is due on Thursdayday. We will play bingo and students need to have this completed. This is a great review of all of the concepts we have learned so far this year.
  • We will continue to review all of the math concepts/standards for the year each week with the 30 problem math review. This is due on Thursday this week. Please make sure your child takes his/her time on the assignment. If they don’t understand/remember a skill, please have them come to morning math.
  • We will continue  writing about math. Ask your child about WAM! (write about math!)
  • We will then study Chapter 5: Algebra. This will also be an overview since most of this will be studied in 6th grade.
  • We will have some assignments that students will complete on FrontRow or Khan Academy.
  •  Students are to complete 30 minutes of math websites a week. A great place to start is Xtra Math. Students may then choose from Khan Academy or Frontrowed. March Math Expectations went home this week. It is due on Thursday, March 29! We won’t be in school on April 1st!

Science

  • Students are working hard in their groups on their jet toy cars. Ask them about the expectations.
  • We will have a competition against the other 5th grade class when we are all finished to see whose car can go the furthest! There are two grades for this assignment. One is for the distance travel and the second is for the group project slide presentation. Check out the rubric! It is posted on Canvas!

Social Studies

  • There will be no DG this week!
  • TWe will take a short break from social studies, but will still study current events by watching Channel One News.
  • We will also read several articles that are cross-curricular. This means that we will be learning about the history of the United States through different articles.

WINN TIME: 

Beginning in quarter 4, our WINN packet will be a grade. This is a review of reading/language arts skills and math skills. There will be two grades given on this assignment. One in written language and the second in math. Students have nearly 30 minutes each day to work on this in class.

During our WINN time, we give each student “What I Need Now!” This will just get to continue with a second set of hands!

I plan to spend a lot of time with my children playing outside! I hope that the weather is nice. We will also take a trip to Indiana to visit their grandparents !

Please help us reach our goal of $1000 to donate to JDRF to help support juvenile diabetes research. Coins wars are going on now and every Friday students can purchase sneakers for $1 from the Project Impact store. These sneakers will be hung in the school to show your support of this great cause.

Our class will get to have Miss Ferguson in our classroom each day during our WINN time. She will work with a small group to help reinforce math and reading skills and concepts with students.

We completed our coat drive. Thank you for everyone who donated to a great cause. Our next service project is to help raise money for JDRF! We have a lot of exciting things planned this month to help our school raise money to support a great cause. We are going to have a coin war competition between the grade levels, a book bracket challenge, and a March Madness basketball game to end the project!

I don’t mind it because it means it is light out later into the evening! I love being outside some after being at work all day! What about you?
